Follow the Scary Thing

Updated: Jan 26, 2023

Sometimes you might encounter things out riding that are different or out of context for your horse. I was riding a horse recently on Dartmoor and we came across some calves. The horse was quite curious but also wary so we made sure we stayed back until they had all got up and then we followed them. I find it's really good to follow things if your horse is concerned (cows, tractors, lorries etc) because they usually get further away, which is less scary. In the case of these calves, we were able to influence which direction they went in, which helped to build the mare's confidence further. Some horses really enjoy following cows and can even take over the steering if your focus and intention is good enough. We are lucky to have these natural obstacles to play with on our doorstep.
